Turning Mirrors into Windows: How to Design and Develop an Effective Assessment Plan

Generally speaking, assessment is evaluating achievement. However, educators often replace true evaluation with fact sheets, graphs, GPAs etc. It is important to remember that putting too much emphasis on grades will get students to only care about performance and not actual learning, improvement and progress. Fair and effective assessment techniques should be in place to nurture understanding and healthy motivation.Assessment should not be done for the purposes of compliance, but should be used for the expressed purpose of improving student learning and student services in any postsecondary setting.  In this way, institutions can be assured that continuous improvement will take place.

Join this session by expert speaker Jerald Henderson, Ph.D, to acquire knowledge and practical examples for designing and developing an assessment plan for your postsecondary institution.  You will be equipped with the foundational and practical understanding of the purpose of assessment, what assessment entails as to development student learning outcomes, and examples of assessment instruments that can be used to measure those outcomes.

Examples of assessment templates and plans will be provided in the PowerPoint slides to provide practical illustrations of what institutional assessment designs and formats could look like in actual applications. In addition to the PowerPoint slides, you will receive a Higher Education Primer that is authored by the facilitator and includes the following:

  • A glossary of assessment-related terms and definitions
  • Schematic example of how assessment should be linked to the institution’s mission
  • Understanding and Using Assessment Procedures
  • Steps in the Outcomes Assessment Process
  • Examples of Standardized Assessment Tools that are used by Postsecondary Institutions
