Event Description

Meeting the Unique Mental Health and Emotional Needs of the LGBTQIA Community

Research clearly indicates that members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex and Allies (LGBTQIA) community experience stigma, prejudice, and discrimination on a daily basis and that the hostile and stressful social environment they constantly encounter precipitates mental and emotional health problems. In fact, incidence of mental and emotional diagnoses among this community exceeds other populations – and this is not expected to change given the current political and cultural climate. Meeting the unique mental health and emotional needs of the LGBTQIA community should be a top priority in any educational institution or employment setting. Not only is it our obligation as professionals and concerned human beings to help these individuals better navigate the often unfriendly and even hostile environments they encounter on a daily basis, but the better we understand and respond to their complex needs, the more we reinforce the intrinsic value of what we provide to an increasingly diverse society.

In this session by expert speaker Aaron W. Hughey, you will be much better equipped to understand, and respond to, the unique mental health and emotional needs of the LGBTQIA community. Meeting the mental and emotional health needs of the LGBTQIA community should be a priority if you are in higher education and concerned about recruitment, retention-to-graduation, and job placement of all students, and especially those in this unique and vibrant population. Appropriately meeting the needs of the LGBTQIA community can serve to help your institution avoid costly litigation and other problems that inevitably arise on campus when the needs of these individuals are not met in a satisfactory manner. This also has financial implications in that enhanced recruitment, retention and placement adds significantly to the fiscal viability of your college or university.
