Event Description

How Academic and Student Affairs Can Partner Together to Develop Holistic Learning Experiences

In the latest book, "Contested Issues in Student Affairs," Marcia Baxter Magolda and Peter Magolda pose the question, "How does the perception that learning takes place exclusively in the classroom persist?" This is an important question for those within the field of student affairs to answer. We must also understand how to overcome this perception. Perhaps the first step is in acknowledging two important truths. The first is that the differences between academic and student affairs constitute an ideological difference that cannot be bridged without a better understanding of the assumptions on which they are based. The second is that the distinction between classroom learning and learning outside of the classroom is meaningless to students. It's all learning.

Join this session by our expert speaker Dr. Adam Peck, who has been in the forefront of a national movement to measure and design learning experiences that aims at building career expertise into a broad variety of co-curricular experiences. In this session, he will discuss the ideological differences that prevent academic and student affairs from working together effectively, and show how a new focus on career readiness can create opportunities for powerful partnerships to take place.
