Administrators should be Aware of Academic Freedom and Faculty Rights and should also be Careful about Institution’s Exposure to Potential Liability.

The right of faculty to design their courses and to speak their mind in the classroom and in class materials is often impacted by the notion of academic freedom.  This concept is derivation of the right to free speech, and courts, mediators and arbitrators regularly apply it in matters concerning educational institutions - both as a matter of constitutional law and contract.  Accordingly, educational administrators and bargaining units must have familiarity with the concept of academic freedom and its common application and have an understanding of its proper application in various matters, including issues surrounding curriculum modifications, classroom and course supervision, and faculty discipline.  It is imperative that administrators and faculty understand how to respect this important faculty right, while, at the same time, minimize the institution’s exposure to potential liability.

This presentation by expert speaker James P. Evans will help both administrators and faculty achieve a better understanding of the concept of academic freedom, its common and proper application, and how to address a myriad of issues where it comes into play. Through this webinar:

  • Identifying areas where academic freedom must give way to institutional risk management, and providing guidance on how to accomplish that objective. 
  • Providing specific guidance in response to specific questions concerning issues raised by the concept of academic freedom and institutional management.
