How Academic and Student Affairs’ Partnerships Can Help Bridge the Gap Between the Curriculum and Co-Curriculum.

A long trail of higher education research points to a persistent gap between students’ in-class and out-of-class learning experiences, exacerbated by rigid divisional boundaries (silos) between academic and student affairs. Bridging this gap and forging productive partnerships between the curriculum and co-curriculum is essential for creating a more “seamless” educational experience for undergraduates and a more unified sense of campus community. Integrating the professional forces of academic and student affairs and harnessing their collective power is also critical for increasing student retention and college completion rates.

Research consistently demonstrate that retention initiatives developed collaboratively and delivered jointly by these two major educational divisions result in more comprehensive support programs with greater impact on student persistence than do initiatives developed independently and delivered in isolation.

In this session by expert speaker Joe Cuseo you will acquire research-based practices and theoretically-grounded principles for implementing two old, but still relevant adages: “It takes the whole college to educate the whole student” and “Retention is everybody’s business.” You will be equipped with strategies for coordinating the content and process (delivery) of the curriculum and co-curriculum in ways that simultaneously support students’ academic persistence, personal (holistic) development, and professional (career) preparation.
