Enhance Academic Accessibility Across Campus With Effective Disability Services and Course Designer Partnerships.

At most institutions, the main responsibility for campus academic accessibility falls on the disability services office. They meet with students with disabilities to determine appropriate academic accommodations. These accommodations often require faculty to do something differently, such as make sure that all materials in an online course are accessible for blind students. Unfortunately, disability offices are often understaffed and do not have the resources to train or support faculty in how to provide some of these accommodations.

On the other hand, many institutions have faculty development programs and/or instructional technologists that help faculty design their courses. Unfortunately, these individuals frequently do not have an understanding of accessibility, which results in inaccessible courses that have to be quickly reworked once a student with a disability enrolls. This retrofitting can be time consuming and expensive and is often poorly done when time is short.

The ideal solution is to develop a partnership between disability services and course designers. This workshop will present a model that is two-pronged.

  • Instructional designers are informed about accessibility and help develop courses from the beginning that consider accessibility. This saves time and money, and results in well-designed courses for everyone.
  • Once a student with a disability is enrolled, faculty are supported in making any adaptations to their courses that are required.

This session by expert speaker Beth Case will focus on online courses and online materials that are used in face-to-face courses. However, many of the recommendations will also apply to in-class accommodations.
