IEP, Evaluations and Eligibility Requirements Made Easy

The federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires local education agencies to provide comprehensive evaluations in all areas of suspected disability for children within their jurisdiction who may require special education and related services.  In this session, the duty of public school districts to identify, locate and evaluate all children with disabilities, also known as “child find,” will be examined, along with special education eligibility determinations and the basics of developing the Individualized Education Program (IEP).

During this insightful one-hour session with special education legal expert, Melanie E. Dunn, you will get a first-hand look at proven strategies for meeting IDEA Child Find challenges and successfully implementing IEPs for each of them.

In this program, you’ll:

  • Learn about the typical landmines LEAs face in navigating IDEA’s child find requirements
  • Review how the initial evaluation process has changed, including developments with regard to the implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) procedures
  • Develop strategies for handling specific parent requests concerning evaluations, including request for independent educational evaluations (IEEs)
  • Learn how to make eligibility determinations that are properly documented and defensible when faced with a pending due process hearing disputing the school district’s decision
  • Discover the most common mistakes school districts make in developing a student’s first IEP
