Event Description

Increase Student Engagement in Classes and Encourage them to Learn

As an educator, you must have been thwarted by your students' lack of participation and seeming 'indifference' in classroom. Though you may tend to ignore the students, it is imperative to understand the unique characteristic both the students and the contexts so as to establish and sustain student engagement.

This session by expert speaker Kathleen Whitmire, PhD, CCC-SLP, BC-CL provides very useful information on how to increase student engagement and motivate students to learn. Topics to be presented are: (a) hallmarks of social, cognitive, and linguistic development during adolescence; (b) a proven model of intrinsic motivation; and (c) relevant social, educational and technological contexts for adolescents. Each topic includes practical applications for effective work with adolescents.

Taking part in this session would help you:

  • Identify key characteristics of social, cognitive and linguistic development of adolescents as they relate to educational programs and settings
  • Describe a highly regarded evidence-based model for intrinsic motivation that has been used effectively with a range of populations including adolescents
  • List common demands of current relevant social, educational and technological contexts
  • Apply this information to developing and implementing instructional programs for adolescents
