Use of Abusive Intervention on Students with Autism Calls for Costly Litigation. Learn how to uproot the problem of Bullying.

The U.S. Department of Education reports more than 70,000 students subjected to restrain and 37,000 to seclusion during the academic year 2011-12 due to bullying in academic school year. The vast majority (75%) of these abusive interventions were used on students with disabilities (e.g., Autism, Emotionally Disturbed). The inappropriate use of seclusion and restraint with students with disabilities in educational settings has resulted in intense controversy, litigation and media attention.

Behavior expert Dr. Joe Ryan, Ph.D. will provide an overview of state laws, policies and recommended guidelines to help prevent such potential abuses from occurring. Dr. Ryan will also review specific strategies that teachers can readily implement in lieu of seclusion or restraint to help prevent and de-escalate aggressive behaviors. These skills will help eliminate the use of seclusion and restraint and reduce the risk of costly litigation to schools. Some of the benefits that the session has:

  • The session will highlight federal and state legislation, policies and guidelines related to the use of seclusion and restraint in school settings.
  • This session will provide recommendations for teachers and administrators enabling them to develop a safe school policy and/or guidelines concerning the use of seclusion and restraint.
  • Participants will learn effective de-escalation strategies for dealing with aggressive students.

Training Objective:

  • Attendees will understand the “Cycle of Aggression” and learn how to observe signs that indicate a student is becoming agitated and/or violent in class.
  • Attendees will learn safe and effective methods for responding to students that display verbally and/or physically aggressive behaviors.
  • Attendees will learn critical components of an effective seclusion and restraint policy that every school should have.
  • Attendees will learn about evidence based practices that teach students with ASD pro-social behaviors which will reduce the likelihood of future aggression.
