How to Focus More on College Completion Rather Than Just Increasing Student Retention.

Colleges aggressively front-load and "love bomb" new students during their first term on campus, but intentional support programming often drops off precipitously thereafter. Historically, campuses have operated under the assumption that focusing on promoting student retention through the critical transition to higher education (the freshman year) will culminate in higher graduation rates.

If the college experience is viewed as a connected set of four distinct stages (first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior years), each with its own identifiable set of stage-specific tasks and adjustments, it can serve as a blueprint for developing a sustained, systematic sequence of support programs that promotes student success from matriculation through graduation.

As important as the first-year experience is, substantial student attrition can and does occur during the sophomore, junior and senior years of the college. By focusing more attention on promoting student success during the middle and final stages of the college experience, we move from the narrow, short-term goal of increasing student retention to the broader (and nobler) long-term goal of promoting college completion.
