Strategies for Early Identification and Prevention of Student Suicides in Higher Education

Suicide in higher education is a crisis. No campus is immune from this mental health issue that continues to grow within our communities. According to, the second leading cause of death among college students is suicide associated with untreated depression. While student affairs and mental health professionals in higher education realize the problem, they continue to struggle with early identification of the person of concern and finding the sufficient resources.

In this program, expert speakers Chip Reese and Dan Rose will walk you through how an active behavior intervention team (BIT) can assist with early identification of suicidal ideation in students. You will learn how campus counseling centers can train key community members to interview with a person of concern and also provide guidance on managing the community fallout which occurs after a suicide attempt or a completed suicide.

This program will challenge student affairs and mental health professions to examine the policies and practices they currently use to prevent student suicide. Additionally, you will gain new information and resources that are designed to save lives.
