Best Practices to Minimize Unconscious Bias in Classrooms and Campuses.

Implicit, or unconscious bias, exists in classrooms and on college campuses. What does it look like? How can faculty create an unbiased learning environment?  How can faculty get in touch with their own unconscious biases to combat unintentional bias with students? Research suggests that unconscious bias regarding race and gender impacts relationships with professors. One study showed that certain academic fields of study were less likely to respond to applications from minority students. So, what are the best practices education should follow in minimizing unconscious bias?

Unconscious bias is something everyone has experienced – un-intentioned or well-intentioned. Subtle association towards group of people is what leads to unconscious bias, and stereotypes that often unconsciously operate, are deemed to be the roots of bias. For e.g. the racial tension that is often experienced in US, particularly with police shooting Black men. Research by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has revealed that unconscious bias plays an important roles in the lives of law enforcement authorities and attorneys. To counter this problem, DOJ will be rolling out training for more than 23,000 agents in FBI and other federal bodies, as well as 5,800 attorneys in 94 attorney offices all around the country. Unconscious bias training is also being provided to State and local police/sheriff departments.

Every day, more organizations are coming up with unconscious bias training for their employees to make sure there is no workplace discrimination in different office processes. 20% of all large corporations are conducting unconscious bias training, according to the Wall Street, and it is what shapes the organizational climate. One of the biggest challenge in addressing implicit bias is that people often resist accepting behavior inconsistent with stereotypes, and accept behavior consistent with stereotypes – according to research. Though with 50 years of civil rights law, inequality is still rampant, and relates to education, poverty and success levels. Unconscious bias is the one that influence those inequalities.
