Our most vulnerable population is young people who identify as LGBTQ+. And all too often educational institutions are failing to protect LGBTQ+ students due to a lack of confidence and understanding. But knowledge is power. Join this informative webinar by Dr. Jennifer L. Pregnancy and parenthood choices are a personal, natural part of life. Yet, on university and college campuses, employees and students are particularly vulnerable to judgments about these choices—such as breast feeding, pumping, or excused class time. They can lead to discrimination towards pregnant women, single mothers, and parents of either gender. Such discrimination is a direct violation of civil rights—one that could put your university or college at legal risk.

Thankfully, this is a largely preventable risk. In this informative webinar, sexual harassment expert Dr. Susan Fineran will teach you how to stop pregnancy-based sex discrimination at your institution—and to instead provide needed support services to students who are, or are about to become, parents. Dr. Jennifer L. Martin

Jennifer L. Martin, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of education at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Prior to working in higher education, Dr. Martin worked in public education for 17 years, 15 of those as the department chair of English at an urban alternative high school for students labeled at-risk for school failure in metropolitan Detroit. She is the editor of the two-volume series Women as Leaders in Education: Succeeding Despite Inequity, Discrimination, and Other Challenges (Praeger, 2011), which examines the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality for current and aspiring leaders from a variety of perspectives. Dr. Martin is also the editor of Racial Battle Fatigue: Insights from the Front Lines of Social Justice Advocacy (recipient of the 2016 AERA Division B’s Outstanding Book Recognition Award; Praeger, 2015),which contains personal stories of the implications of doing social justice work in the field and in the university. Dr. Martin has numerous publications on bullying and harassment, educational equity, and issues of social justice, including: Teaching for educational equity: Case studies for professional development and principal preparation, volumes 1 (Rowman & Littlefield, 2016) and 2 (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017), and Feminist pedagogy, practice, and activism: Improving lives for girls and women (Routledge, 2017). She is currently studying the development of culturally responsive leadership practices. Dr. Martin has been providing profession development workshops in Canton City School (Canton, OH) monthly for the past two years on Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading with great success. She previously provided similar consulting for Akron City Schools (Akron, OH).

Dr. Susan Strauss

Susan Strauss Ed.D. is an international speaker, trainer, consultant and recognized expert on harassment. She also conducts harassment and workplace bullying investigations and functions as a consultant to attorneys as well as an expert witness in harassment lawsuits. Her clients are from education, business, healthcare, law and government organizations from both the public and private sector. Dr. Strauss authored the book, Sexual Harassment and Teens: A Program for Positive Change, and co-authored, Girls and Boys Getting Along: Teaching Sexual Harassment in the Elementary Classroom, as well as book chapters and articles in professional journals regarding sexual harassment. She has been featured on The Donahue Show, CBS Evening News and other television and radio programs as well as interviewed for newspaper and journal articles such as Harvard Education Newsletter, Lawyers Weekly and Times of London. 

Dr. Strauss is the recipient of the Excellence in Educational Equity Award from the Minnesota Department of Education for her work in sexual harassment in education. Susan has spoken about sexual harassment in education at international conferences in Botswana, Egypt, Thailand and the U.S. She consulted with the Israeli Ministry of Education, as well as with educators from Israel, England, Australia, St. Maarten and Canada. She traveled to Poland and conducted research on sex discrimination and sexual harassment in Polish workplaces with Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights. Susan has a doctorate in organizational leadership. She is a registered nurse, has a bachelor's degree in psychology and counseling, a master's degree in public health, and professional certificate in training and development. She has been involved in the harassment arena since 1985.

Dr. Susan Fineran

Susan Fineran is a leading voice on the subject of peer sexual harassment and its effect on adolescent mental health. A researcher in this field since 1995, Dr. Fineran was invited to present at the 2011 National Summit on Gender-Based Violence among Young People, hosted by the U.S. Dept. of Education, Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools and the U.S. National Institute of Justice in Washington, DC. Dr. Fineran is a licensed clinical social worker and her professional career includes experience in the areas of aging, substance abuse, child and family treatment, sex discrimination and women's issues. Dr. Fineran has been researching peer sexual harassment and bullying and their impact on adolescent mental health for over 25 years. Her work has been influential in several Supreme Court cases as well. Two of her early studies were cited in amicus briefs regarding the responsibility of schools to provide an environment protected from sexual harassment by peers [1999 United States Supreme Court, Davis v. Monroe County board of Education (97-843)].

Dr. Fineran’s research has also focused on the effects of bullying and sexual harassment on sexual minority youth and she has been an advocate for instituting more prevention education to combat sexual harassment in K-12 schools. Over the past decade, Dr. Fineran has published extensively in her research area concerning sexual harassment, bullying, and adolescent mental health and is a co-author of the book Sexual harassment, education and work: Current theories, research and best practices for prevention. Additionally, she has conducted the few studies examining sexual harassment of working teenagers in high school. This research has been highlighted in a number of national publications including; The Washington Post, Good Housekeeping, E-Zine AlterNet, Family Circle, The Oregonian, and NASW News. Dr. Fineran has received three $300,000 awards (2009, 2013 & 2017) from the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women to fund the University of Southern Maine Campus Violence Safety Program. Dr. Fineran is Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern Maine School of Social Work and Women and Gender Studies Program. Her education includes an MSW from the Catholic University of America, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
